To Grow or "Just" Evolve Your Business

There’s no shame in admitting you like your business the way it is, but you may have realised that you aren’t getting what you should out of it and it's time to look at things differently!
There are a lot of posts out there telling you to grow your business, reach that landmark £1 million turnover by the end of the year or scale your business to exit in 3 years.
While that is exciting and there is a place for that, it doesn’t mean you can’t also be content with where you are. As much as the experts say - when starting your business you should have a plan, and plan for your exit - there are a vast majority of small businesses that just start. Throwing themselves into something they want to do and see if it works - they can't plan what they really don't know and if at that stage there is no need to apply for funding or take on staff, then it is hard to see the purpose of that well defined plan!
In my first business, JT Accounting, we have had steady year on year growth since the start, in all but 2 years. I haven’t pushed for growth we couldn’t comfortably cope with, as I like the team we have, and other than the painful Covid period it has suited me.
However, there comes a time when you know something needs to change. That's when you need to dig into what you really want and decide, usually one of three things:
Do I want to grow the business to become more profitable or take on partners that can take on some of the workload?
Do I want to prepare the business for my exit so I can move on in the next year or so?
Do I want to stay as we are - just refine or evolve the business or the Clients we work with, to suit our working style or philosophy?
Making this key decision can be incredibly motivating and help you find your purpose again. You don't have to know the answer from the start but at some point it will become clear and then you can act accordingly.
